Skills for Reaching Financial Goals

No matter what a person sets out to do, it always turns out to be more complicated than expected. Becoming financially successful is no different. By taking the appropriate steps we can make sure we progress at top speed and do not get sidetracked.

First Steps Toward Reaching Financial Goals

As soon as you decide to do better with your money your first step is to sit down and work out a list of goals you would like to achieve.

After that you make some clear plans for reaching those goals. You break those plans down into workable steps and you are on your way.

Obstacles That Get in the Way of Financial Success

At first most people jump in and initially make some real progress, but over time, unfortunately, stagnation sets in.

Most of us have so many interests it is easy to get distracted. Soon little attention is given to what is honestly recognized as an important priority.

Then again, sometimes there are activities that we really want done, we just don’t want to do them! Doesn’t make sense does it. But it’s true.

For example, I used to run a few miles every day. I loved it, I just had a hard time starting out. Once on the road I was always exhilarated.

Action Steps to Keep Us on Track

Say you have a goal to increase your knowledge about money by reading about money for at least fifteen minutes every day. How can you assure yourself that you will get this done?

Let me suggest a set of two skills that combined can help with this and many other tasks.

Step One: Setting Priorities with a To Do List

The first is one you know about, but may not use consistently. Every day make use of a “To Do” list. I carry 3X5 cards in my pocket for this and other purposes.

It is essential to reorder your list, either by numbering or rewriting in a new order according to importance. We could label it your Priority List, instead of To Do List.

This list consists of jobs you need to get done in order of their importance for a given day. Tomorrow a new list will be needed. Items on the list may change and the order may change as well.

Step Two: Motivate Yourself to Get the Job Done

The second practice to adopt a is described in a great little book by Brian Tracy called Eat That Frog.. The book title and idea behind it comes from the answer to the question, “What is the best way to eat a frog?” The answer being, “Quickly.”

Ever since reading that book, I find myself from time to time muttering to myself, “Eat that frog. Eat that frog. Eat that frog.” Then I jump into the task that needs to get done and I do it.

Conclusion

So here is all works in real life. Everyday set out your list of important tasks, including what you intend to do that day to improve your finances. Then make an important commitment to do what is on your priority list in the order of importance, even if it means you must “eat that frog!”

No matter how pleasant or unpleasant, whatever needs doing most, do it. Just do it. Then repeat the process tomorrow. If you do your success will accelerate dramatically.
